The answer is no, you do not have a problem with me – nor I with you. I’m not saying that I never feel angry, frustrated or annoyed about something a friend or family member has said. Or that I don’t have a list of celebrities who get on my nerves. I am human after all! But underneath it all – after the first judgement has been made and my annoyance begins to fade, I realise that deep down inside it’s really myself with whom I have a problem. And that’s what this blog is all about. It’s about that overwhelmingly powerful anxiety that most of us experience throughout our lives: the idea that another human being may not agree with us, like us, think that we’re beautiful or talented enough… The list goes on.
But this would be a horribly depressing blog if it only documented what it feels like to worry about what others think of us. So I will be talking a lot about the underlying cause of this particular anxiety, shedding a new perspective on the situation and hopefully demonstrating that it is possible to live a life in which you care less about what others think and more about living a life which makes you happy. After all, this is your life.
You may already have guessed by now, but yes, I am someone who has spent many an hour agonising over things I’ve said, done, worn, created – my biggest fear being that it might not have been quite perfect enough or deemed acceptable by those around me. In becoming aware of this trait in myself, I have become intensely aware of how it affects those around me, including close friends and family members. That’s right – the very people whose opinion I was so very worried about have been (to some extent) doing exactly the same thing! Which just goes to show what a load of old nonsense it is.
It is a huge problem, probably exacerbated by the modern world we live in, which rewards material success, good looks, virtuous behaviour and adherence to a whole host of social norms. It’s no wonder we’re all going around wondering what we should say or do! Or what we should have said or done…
Anyway, that’s enough rambling for now. Hopefully you have received my message loud and clear and you are now ready to dive head first into one of my inspirational blog posts. Too much? OK, well if any of this has struck a chord with you, have a quick shufty about my blog and see if you can find any inspiration. If you are able to let go, even just a little bit, of your concerns around what others think, then I will be a very happy bunny indeed.
Bye for now x
